BOOKS WE LOVE: John Singer Sargent
This book has really fabulous reproductions of all the famous paintings - the Boit Sisters, the little Sears girls etc, but what really makes it cool is it traces exclusively Sargent's career through his children's portraits. Usually they're interspersed with his other work, but in this book you can see them all together, and see how they changed his outlook and his career over time. They're beautiful and haunting. And - a man after my own heart - he takes children very seriously, portraying them as individuals of depth, not just tiny poster images for their parents.
